“Does dental treatment really cause pain?” This question often arises when individuals require dental care. In addressing this concern, it’s essential to first define the concept of pain. Pain is the sensation typically triggered by external stimuli acting on receptors in the nervous system. When considering the experience of pain, both physiological and psychological mechanisms play a role in various pathological conditions.
During dental procedures, the body perceives the treatment as a form of trauma, resulting in what is known as physiological pain. To mitigate this discomfort, two types of anesthesia methods, known as block and infiltrative anesthesia, are employed. While local anesthesia targets a specific area, block anesthesia offers a broader numbing effect compared to infiltrative anesthesia. Once this anesthesia takes effect, patients may experience a partial loss of sensation, but pain is effectively prevented.
